Workshops for Warriors Helps Karl Transition Straight to a CNC Operator and Programmer Position

Prior to finding Workshops for Warriors, Karl, 24, a Petroleum Engineer in the US Marines Corps, only looked four years ahead for his career plans. “I just kept re-enlisting because I didn’t have a plan,” he said.

Not only did Workshops for Warriors help him plan a transition from the service to the civilian world in one four-month semester, it also helped him line up a job as a CNC operator and programmer at Orbitform in Jackson, Michigan.

Karl found out about Workshops for Warriors through the Department of Defense’s SkillBridge initiative, a program designed to promote civilian job training.

Originally from New York, Karl was open to relocating anywhere with his wife and child. After hearing Hernán Luis y Prado, President of Workshops for Warriors, speak at a manufacturing association meeting, Michigan-based Orbitform requested a graduate to hire. Karl applied for the position, and was invited out to meet with the Orbitform team in person. By the time he ended the semester, not only did he have a job lined up, but he also had amassed 10 nationally recognized certifications – a combination that boosted his confidence.

“I feel 100 percent prepared for the job,” explained Karl. “I had no experience with any of this beforehand. But after attending classes at Workshops for Warriors, I am confident I will succeed.”

Karl mentioned that Workshops for Warriors gave him the skills to be competitive in the job market, but the certifications back it up. “Not only do I have a military background, I have certifications to back up my abilities.”

Karl said Workshops for Warriors had a huge impact on his life. When he was looking for direction, he found it through attending classes.

“It was great I was able to do this at no cost to me. I still have my GI bill that I will use to achieve my Mechanical Engineering degree. I have already been knocking out my general education courses. I will finish up my degree when I am in Michigan.”

Karl will start his new job at the end of January.

Karl received the following nationally recognized credentials:

  • 3-Axis CNC Milling Machine Programming
  • 3-Axis CNC Milling Machine Setup (New Control)
  • Advanced Mil Design and Toolpaths X6
